Multi-component (aka converted-wave, aka PS) data is a bit of an enigma. It’s like poetry; we know it’s important and we want to appreciate and understand it, but it’s hard work and the encounter can leave us a little bewildered and secretly disappointed. What was all the fuss about?, we ask. I think the key is to keep an open mind and, like all seismic interactions, let the sound waves speak for themselves in their native tongue. Just as French poetry loses something in the translation to English (I’m told), so does PS data when we convert (clumsily, I might add) to PP time.
